Twitter, First U.S. Tech Firm, Fined for Breaking EU Privacy

    After two years of European privacy law GDPR taking effect, in December 2020, Twitter becomes the first American company to be fined for data breaches. The Wall Street Journal reported that Twitter was fined $546,000 for failure to document and properly notify users of data breaches within 72 hours of being informed about them.

US Treasury Department’s Email System Breached by APT29

    December 2020: The Washington Post reported that the US Treasury and Commerce departments experienced data breaches when hackers infiltrated their internal email systems for months. The group known as APT29 or Cozy Bear, was also behind a hack of the White House and State Department during the Obama administration.
