MessageSolution Intra-Server and Cross-Server Migration
Migration with MessageSolution

Migration takes two major forms.  The first is upgrading email server versions (i.e., Exchange 2003 to 2007), or intra-server migration.  The second is cross-server migration (i.e., Groupwise to Exchange, Exchange to Domino, etc.), or inter-server migration.  MessageSolution’s live archiving solutions can effectively address both these scenarios.  Using MessageSolution to archive before migration, enterprise customers benefit from decreasing original data sizes to a small portion of the original size, which significantly decreases the migration project timeline.

Intra-Server Migration / Version Upgrades
Archiving with MessageSolution Enterprise Email Archive before performing an intra-server migration or version upgrade helps the migration process tremendously. For example, if a company plans to migrate from Exchange Server 2003 to 2007, archiving before the migration ensures a copy of all relevant data is contained in the archive.

Once a copy of all data has been ingested into the archive, the company can begin to stub mails. Stubbing strips the bulk of message content or large attachments off the email server and replaces it with a dynamic link to the archive server, where the data is contained. When users click these stubbed items, the contents are pulled directly from the archive server, bypassing the email server entirely. This avoids the common problem other archiving solutions experience, that of data yo-yo-ing back and forth between the email server and the archive server. Along with stubbing data, data that does not need to be accessed often (perhaps data older than 5 years) can also be removed from the email server, with a copy remaining in the archive.

By combining archiving, stubbing, and message removal, data volume on the original email server becomes much smaller, so the migration process will take much less time. MessageSolution Professional Engineering Services (PES) team can help organizations to apply the migration process to migrate data to the new email server, as archiving has now reduced the data size to a size small enough for organizations to manage the migration using free tools available from Microsoft. After archiving with MessageSolution, the required storage size for the new email server version will be much lower.

To re-activate live archiving for the new email server, the email server must simply be configured to point to the new email server and archiving can begin again. Additionally, MessageSolution PES team can reverse the stubbing process and restore stubbed message contents/attachments back to the email server and individual mailboxes.

Inter-Server Migration / Cross-Server Migration
MessageSolution can effectively help organizations that plan to switch email server environments to achieve a smooth and quick migration experience when migrating from Groupwise to Exchange, Domino to Exchange, Exchange to Domino, Exchange to Scalix, etc. MessageSolution is the industry leader in supporting all major email servers, an ideal partner to assist an organization during cross-server migration.

As with intra-server migration, companies can archive and stub all existing emails and attachments from Server A, then migrate the entire email storage volumes from Server A to Server B. The archive must then be pointed to Server B to re-start live archiving. This process ensures a smooth cross-server migration.

Additionally, MessageSolution PES team can help organizations to reverse the stubbing process and restore stubbed message contents/attachments back to the email server and individual mailboxes.
